Secific IgE and IgM Antibodies in Sera of Neurocysticercosis Patients

Abstract
|

|
This study was undertaken to evaluate the significance of cysticercus-specific IgE and IgM antibody levels in the sera of neurocysticercosis patients. A total of 255 samples from 126 cases of neurocysticercosis, 17 sparganosis, 31 paragonimiasis, 16 Taenia saaisiata infection, 40 other neurologic diseases and 23 normal: controls was examined by their serum in levels of specific IgG, IgE and IgM antibodies by micro-ELISA. In addition, 15 cases of neurocysticercosis were examined in their levels after praziquantel treatment. In micro-ELISA, cystic´ fluid was used as antigen in protein concentration of 2.5 ,ug/ml (for IgG), or 5.0 /ag/ml (for IgE and IgM). Serum dilution was 1 : 100(IgG) or 1
50(IgE, IgM). Respective conjugates were diluted in 1 : 5, 000 (IgG), 1 : 500 (IgE) or 1 1, 000 (IgM). The results were summarized as follows.
1. The absorbance of specific IgE antibody in sera of neurocysticercosis patients was 0.40 0.22 and was significantly higher than in other groups..Levels of IgE antibody correlated with the specific IgG antibody levels (r=0. 939). Measurement of IgE antibody in neurocysticercosis was sensitive and specific as in IgG antibody test.
2. The absorbance of specific IgM antibody in serum of neurocysticercosis patients was 0. 09 0. 06, and it was not different from other groups. - IgM antibody levels were not related with either IgG or IgE antibody ´levels.
3. Serological follow-up examinations in 15
-neurocysticercosis cases showed that the specif is IgE antibody levels fluctuated along with IgG antibody , levels while that of IgM antibody remained in low levels throughout the observation period.
The above results indicated that the measurement of cysticercus-specific IgE antibody in neurocysticercosis was diagnostic as much as that of IgG antibody. The measurement of specific IgM antibody was considered to be helpful in detecting the early stage of infection which are known to, be particularly susceptible to praziquantel treatment, though levels of IgM antibody in chronic cases were not significant.
